Starting as a husband-wife team of log builders, Mike and Laurie Senty
have been around log buildings since 1978, and have been building log buildings full time
since 1981. We take a lot of personal pride in our work. Our approach to our craft is to
produce the best log buildings available anywhere, and we are doing just that.
Using hand
peeled, full length logs, we build in the modern handcrafted, scribe fit or chinked log
construction systems. Our buildings include year round homes, simple seasonal cabins,
resort rental cabins, complicated log structures, and commercial work. We are a versatile
builder and can produce your log building with the features of your dreams. We are a
Minnesota licensed contractor, and can take your log building to any stage of completion.
Features of our
homes vary. Wall logs can be any size you can imagine, from small to very large. We have
excellent log resources for both native building logs and dry western logs. Many of our
homes feature log roof systems, including purlins and trusses. Trusses are load designed,
and the massive logs or timbers are held together with closely fitted mortise and tenon
joinery. A lot of our homes feature split log stairs and spindle railings, or even a
handcrafted spiral stairway.
Because of our eye for style and quality, and the
demand for our work, we have over the years selected and trained a crew of highly skilled
craftsmen to work with us. In order to maintain the workmanship that is the signature of
our homes, we have created incentives for our crew to produce high quality log work. In
addition, we, Mike and Laurie, are directly involved with your home. |

We are on
the job with our crew. We have learned this is important to insuring the day to day
decisions of building your home are made correctly and consistently. In this manner, the
quality of our log buildings is consistent from job to job.
The proof of
this is in our reputation locally. Our new customers check us out regularly. We are
recommended locally by realtors, construction tradesmen, suppliers, past customers, and
local residents. Personal recommendation is our best advertising, and we will always
produce the best log buildings available, in order to maintain this reputation.
Within 80 miles
of Grand Marais, we also general contract our log buildings. If you are building in this
area, we can take your new log building to any level of completion you want. We work with
a number of suppliers and subcontractors who know our work, who can complete it to our
level of quality, and who do the work efficiently and professionally. We have also worked
with the Cook County, MN zoning officials, and Cook County, MN banks. By having us general
contract your new log home, you are assured of high quality crew and job management
throughout the complete construction process.
In addition to
round log construction, we offer post and beam construction in log, with either simple or
complicated log supported roof systems. Typically this is a conventionally framed home
with log accents or detailing to the roof structure or throughout the home. Accents can
include log trusses and log purlins supported by log posts or conventional wall framing,
log stairways, and log railings. It is a fun and exciting architectural touch to a
conventional home, and has appeal in all styles of construction. We have local samples of
this style of construction for you to see.
Because of the
limited number of quality minded midwestern log builders, we are often called to build
outside our local area. These customers choose us when they are looking for quality
workmanship and a knowledgeable log builder who will utilize the advanced techniques of
log construction in their buildings. In these instances, we work closely with your local
builders to put together a package that makes the best use of both our own crew and the
skills of the local builders.
